Softball Earns Second Seed in MASCAC Tournament

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University softball team will be the second seed in the 2018 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Softball Championship Tournament which will be played this week.       

The Rams finished the 2018 regular season with a 21-15 overall record including a 10-4 mark in league play.

Sixth seed Fitchburg State travels to third seed Westfield State on Wednesday in one opening round game with the winner advancing to the double elimination portion of the tournament.  The Rams will host the winner of the Fitchburg State/Westfield State game on Friday at 4 p.m. at Maple Street Field.

The 2018 Rams were led offensively by senior outfielder Dayna Marchant (East Bridgewater, Mass.).  Marchant, who became the first Ram with 200 career hits, batted .500 on the season with 62 hits including six doubles and five triples with 24 RBI.  Sophomore Mycala Moody (North Attleboro, Mass.) batted .395 on the season with five doubles, two triples and 18 RBI.

The Rams were led in the circle by junior Kelsi Gunarathne (Providence, RI) who has a 12-6 record on the year. Gunarathne has tossed 108 innings with 11 complete games, 96 strikeouts and a 1.93 ERA.  Freshman Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.) is 6-3 on the year with a 4.57 ERA.

Fourth seed Bridgewater State hosts fifth seed Salem State in the other opening round game on Wednesday with the winner advancing to face top seed Worcester State on Friday.

Worcester State, the 2018 MASCAC Regular Season Champions, will host the remainder of the double elimination portion of the tournament on Saturday and Sunday. The winner of the tournament receives the MASCAC's automatic bid to the 2018 NCAA Softball Championships.
