Softball Takes a Pair from Mass. Maritime in Five Innings

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University softball team took both ends of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader this afternoon with Mass. Maritime by scores of 11-3 and 8-0 in five innings at Maple Street Field. 

With the wins, the Rams improve to 15-13 on the season and are now 6-2 in the league, while the Bucs fall to 2-18 overall and are now 0-8 in the MASCAC.

The Rams got on the board in the bottom of the first of game one.  Sophomore Mycala Moody (North Attleboro, Mass.) reached on an error and then came around to score when senior Bridget McGrail (Worcester, Mass.) reached on an error.

The Rams added to their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Senior Anna Dziok (Southampton, Mass.) singled to right and moved to second on a sacrifice.  Dziok came around to score on a double by freshman Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.).  Freshman Camille Desrochers (Westford, Mass.) reached on an error allowing Caughey to score from second.  Sophomore Kirsten Dick (Tewksbury, Mass.) tripled to right scoring Desrochers.  Moody followed with an RBI single and Downing added an RBI double pushing the Rams lead to 6-0.

The Bucs got on the board in the top of the fifth with three runs.  Kristin Arthur singled and move to second when Kaylene Murphy was hit by a pitch.   Melissa Cochrane belted a double scoring Arthur with no outs. The Buccaneers loaded the bases with one out for Madison Ovadek and Ovadek reached on a fielder's choice plating the second run.  Jill Corazzini followed with a bloop single to right scoring the final run of the frame.

The Rams came back with five in the bottom of the frame to secure the run rule victory.  Caughey and Dick each plated runs with RBI doubles, while Marchant and Downing delivered RBI singles to close the game.

Junior Kelsi Gunarathne (Providence, RI) earned the victory in the circle improve her season mark to 8-5.  Gunarathne tossed three scoreless innings allowing just one hit with six strikeouts and two walks.

Cochrane took the loss for the Bucs going four and a third and allowing 11 runs, five earned, on 13 hits with two strikeouts.

Moody recorded three hits in the opener for the Rams and scored a pair of runs, while Caughey and Dick each added two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

In game two, the Rams grabbed a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second.  Junior Kayla Finacchiaro (Natick, Mass.) doubled in a run, while Desrochers singled home one.  Marchant reached on a fielder's choice allowing Desrochers to score from third and Downing followed with an RBI fielder's choice.

The Rams pushed their lead to 7-0 with three in the bottom of the third.  Freshman Victoria Ziner (Easton, Mass.) reached on an error allowing a pair of runs to score and Marchant delivered an RBI single.

Freshman Julianna McGovern (Waltham, Mass.) closed the game out for the Rams with an RBI double to left in the bottom of the fifth to reach the eight run mark.

Caughey earned the victory in the circle for the Rams going three innings and allowing no runs on two hits with a strikeout.  Freshman Marissa Vellucci (Tyngsboro, Mass.) tossed two innings of scoreless relief.

The Rams are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they host Roger Williams in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m., while the Buccaneers host Westfield State on Saturday in a MASCAC doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
