Softball Drops Two to Johnson & Wales

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University softball was defeated twice today by Johnson and Wales University in a non-conference doubleheader at Maple Street Field. The Wildcats took game one 5-1 and cruised to a 9-3 victory in game two.

With the wins, the Wildcats are now 5-6 on the year, while the Rams fall to 6-8.

Johnson & Wales grabbed the lead in the opener in the top of the third inning.  Sophomore Tiffani Semanchik singled with two outs and came around to score on a double to deep center by senior Katie Rufo.

In the top of the fifth, the Wildcats pushed the lead to 4-0 on a two run homerun to left off the bat of junior Brenna DuPerry and an RBI single by Semanchik.

Rufo hit a solo homerun to left in the top of the seventh to account for the Wildcats final run in the opener and push their lead to 5-0.

The Rams loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh and sophomore Mycala Moody (North Attleboro, Mass.) delivered an RBI single to center for the Rams lone run in the contest.

Senior Jennifer Corona earned the victory in the circle going six and a third allowing no runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.

Freshman Marissa Velllucci (Tyngsboro, Mass.) took the loss for the Rams going four innings and allowed one earned run on three hits with three walks.

In game two, Johnson and Wales grabbed the lead in the top of the first.  Junior Meghan Gavin tripled and scored from third on a bunt by Semanchik.

The Rams tied the game in the bottom of the second.  Senior Bridget McGrail (Worcester, Mass.) singled and moved to third on a double by freshman Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.).  Sophomore Kirsten Dick (Tewksbury, Mass.) followed with a sacrifice fly to left plating the tying run.

The Rams took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third.  Senior Megan Downing (Hanson, Mass.) walked and scored on a triple by freshman Victoria Ziner (Easton, Mass.).  Senior Anna Dziok (Southampton, Mass.) followed with a bunt scoring Ziner.

The Wildcats tied the game in to top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Saxon Bresnahan and a bases loaded walk by Ally Mishol.

The Wildcats took the lead for good in game two on a three run shot to left by Rufo in the top of the fifth. Johnson and Wales scored four runs in the inning to take control of the game.

Kristin Frost earned the win in game two for the Wildcats going four innings in relief and allowing no runs on two hits with six strikeouts.

Vellucci took the loss going a third of an inning and allowing four earned runs.

The Rams are back in action on Saturday afternoon when they host MCLA in a MASCAC doubleheader at 1 p.m., while the Wildcats host Suffolk on Thursday in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
