Softball Closes Southern Swing with Victories over Fredonia and UNE

Clermont, Fla. – The Framingham State University softball team closed their spring break trip to the PFX game this afternoon with a pair of victories.  The Rams defeated Fredonia 5-1 in the opener and defeated the University of New England 15-7 in five innings in the night cap.

The Rams return home to begin the northern portion of their schedule at 4-6.

In the opener, junior Kelsi Gunarathne (Providence, RI) earned the victory in the circle tossing a complete game.  Gunarathne surrendered just one earned run in seven innings of work while scattering seven hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Fredonia grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Rams scored five unanswered runs over the final six innings to secure the victory.

Freshman Grace Caughey (Mendon, Mass.) belted a solo homer to left center in the top of the second tying the game.

Senior Megan Downing (Hanson, Mass.) walked with one out in the top of the third and moved to second and third on wild pitches.  Classmate Bridget McGrail (Worcester, Mass.) followed with an RBI single to center putting the Rams in the lead for good.

In the top of the fourth, sophomore Kirsten Dick (Tewksbury, Mass.) singled up the middle and was sacrificed to second.  Senior Dayna Marchant (East Bridgewater, Mass.) followed with an RBI double for the 3-1 lead.

The Rams tacked on two more in the top of the sixth on a Fredonia error and a stolen base by sophomore Mycala Moody (North Attleboro, Mass.) to reach the final margin.
