Softball Sweeps Worcester State – Ties School Record for Victories in a Season

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University softball team swept Worcester State University this afternoon 2-0 and 8-2 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Maple Street Field. 

With the wins, the Rams improve to 21-7 on the season and tie the school record for victories in a season with the 2001, 2006, 2007 and 2014 softball teams that all won 21 games.  The Rams also improve to 8-0 in the league and sit alone atop the MASCAC standing.

With the losses, the Lancers are now 9-15 on the year and 4-4 in the MASCAC.

In the opener, the Rams received a two run single from senior Marissa Flynn (Marlborough, Mass.) in the bottom of the third inning to plate the games only runs as sophomore Kelsi Gunarathne (North Providence, RI) recorded her fifth shutout of the season.

Gunarathne improved to 11-3 on the year going the distance and allowing no runs on just one hit, a single to senior Courtney Salisbury (Cranston, RI) in the top of the third inning, with seven strikeouts and three walks.

Sophomore Rachel Frisch (Worcester, Mass.) took the loss for the Lancers going six innings and allowing two runs, one earned, on six hits with seven strikeouts.

In game two, the Rams jumped on the board early with three runs in the bottom of the first inning.  Junior Anna Dziok (Southampton, Mass.) plated two runs on a single and classmate Megan Downing (Hanson, Mass.) added an RBI double.

The lancers cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the third on an RBI single from senior Rachel Couto (Chelmsford, Mass.), but the Rams came back with two in the bottom of the inning on a two run homerun from senior Kylie Boyle (Billerica, Mass.) to push the lead to 5-1.

Worcester added a single run in the top of the fourth on an RBI ground out, but the Rams would add one in the bottom of the inning and two in the sixth on RBI base hits from Flynn and freshman Mycala Moody (North Attleboro, Mass.) to reach the final margin.

Junior Jessica Pietersen (Norton, Mass.) earned the win in game two going seven innings and allowing two earned runs on five this with a strikeout, while Kayla Humphrey (Wallingford, Conn.) took the loss going a third of an inning and allowing three earned runs on four hits.

The Rams are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Roger Williams for a pair of non-conference games beginning at 3 p.m., while Worcester State entertains Salem State in a MASCAC doubleheader on April 22nd at 12 p.m.
