Softball Takes Two From Westfield State

Westfield, Mass. - The Framingham State University softball team won both ends of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader over Westfield State University Friday afternoon. The Rams won 4-2 in the opener before edging the Owls 6-5 in the nightcap.

With the wins, the Rams improve to 19-7 on the year and 6-0 in the MASCAC. The Owls slide to 9-13 overall and are now 3-3 in the conference.

In the opener, Framingham State took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth after back-to-back doubles from Marissa Flynn (Marlborough, Mass.) and Megan Downing (Hanson, Mass.). Lauren Salisbury (Cranston, RIt) plated Downing with a base hit. 

The Owls got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI triple from Kelly and an RBI single from Sullivan to make it a 3-2 game.

Framingham State extended their lead to 4-2 in the top of the seventh after Mycala Moody (North Attleboro, Mass.) tripled and reached home on an error.

Kelsi Gunarathne (North Providence, RI) (10-3) earned the win in the opener allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Westfield's Sarah Eugenio (Marshfield, Mass.) (6-1) took her first loss of the season after surrendering four runs on eight hits.

In the nightcap, Framingham State took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after an RBI single from Kayla Finacchiaro (Natick, Mass.).

The Owls tied it up in the bottom of the first after an RBI single from Maddy Atkocaitis (Westfield, Mass.).

The Rams extended their lead to 2-1 in the top of the third on an RBI single from Finacchiaro and Westfield tied it up again in the bottom of the third on an RBI triple from Atkocaitis.

Framingham State proceeded to score two runs in the top of the fourth with Downing and Kylie Boyle (Billerica, Mass.) scoring and Boyle crossed the plate again on a sac fly in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 5-2.

Westfield's Angelica Banning (E. Granby, Conn. ) scored on an error in the bottom of the sixth to make it 5-3.

The Rams responded in the top of the seventh with an RBI triple from Flynn, allowing teammate Kirsten Dick (Tewksbury, Mass.) to score.

In the bottom of the seventh, Westfield's Gouin hit a double that allowed Sullivan and Kelly to score making it 6-5. A popup to the second baseman ended the inning and capped the Rams victory.
Sullivan (3-8) earned the loss in game two allowing six runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.

Westfield will travel to Salem State University on Monday, April 17th for a MASCAC doubleheader starting at 12:00 p.m.

The Rams resumes MASCAC action on Monday afternoon when they host Worcester State for a pair of games starting at 1:00 p.m.
