Softball Opens Season with 2-0 Victory over Brandeis University

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University softball team opened the 2017 season with a 2-0 victory over Brandeis University in non-conference action this afternoon at Maple Street Field.

With the win, the Rams are now 1-0 on the young season, while the Judges are now 3-4.

The Rams received a complete game effort from sophomore Kelsi Gunarathne (North Providence, RI).  Gunarathne recorded the shutout victory scattering three hits with five strikeouts and walk.

Brandeis' Scottie Todd was tagged with the loss in the circle going six innings and allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts and two walks.

The Rams took the early lead in the bottom of the first on an RBI single up the middle from senior Kylie Boyle (Billerica, Mass.).  Boyle's basehit drove in junior Dayna Marchant (East Bridgewater, Mass.) who had reached earlier in the inning on an infield single and error.

Brandeis' best opportunity to get on the board came in the top of the fifth inning.  A single from Taylor Simala and a double from Brianna Urena gave the Judges runners on second and third with two out.  Junior Anna Dziok (Southampton, Mass.) knocked down a hard hit ball down the line and was able to record the out at first to end the threat.

Dziok added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on a solo home run to left.

The Rams are back in action next week with 10 games The Spring Games in Clermont, Fla. beginning with a pair of games on Sunday against FDU-Florham and Fredonia, while Brandeis travels to Clark on March 18th for a pair of games beginning at noon.
