Men’s Soccer Blanked by Wheaton; 1-0

NortonMass  Wheaton senior back Billy Conte (Washington, D.C.) scored his first collegiate goal to give the Lyons men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over visiting Framingham State University this afternoon on a rain-soaked Nordin Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

THE BASICS:

- Score: Wheaton College 1, Framingham State 0

- Records:Framingham State (6-11-1), Wheaton (11-5)

- Location: Nordin Field – Norton, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Wheaton dominated the majority of the match with a 21-9 shot advantage, but the elements made it difficult to convert scoring chances. The Lyons also owned a 10-1 margin on corner kicks.

  • Conte interrupted over 82 minutes of scoreless play for the Lyons, when sophomore midfielder Robert Lloyd (Lexington, Mass.) threaded a cross to Conte on the left side just outside of the 18-yard box. Conte possessed and then fired a shot inside the far right post, from 20 yards away, to give Wheaton a 1-0 lead with 7:24 left to play in the match.  The marker held up as the only goal that the Lyons would need for victory.

  • Framingham State's only bid for a goal came with just under three minutes remaining when first year back Michael Champagne (Wellesley, Mass.) lifted a shot that Wheaton junior keeper Cameron Millington (Fairfield, Conn.) stretched up and caught to keep the shutout intact.

  • The Lyons had other scoring chances earlier in the contest, but first year goalie Joseph Sturzo (Lowell, Mass.) was up to the task denying consecutive shots from junior midfielder Jack Brusso (Pawtucket, R.I.) and sophomore midfielder Gavin Mahoney (Carlsbad, Calif.) in the 56th minute of play. Lloyd also fired a shot in the 65th minute, but caught too much of the crossbar to keep it a scoreless game.

  • Millington finished with a save to record his third career shutout for Wheaton, while Sturzo turned away seven shots for the Rams.
