WPI Downs Men’s Soccer; 3-0

Framingham, Mass.- The WPI men's soccer team defeated Framingham State by a score of 3-0 in non-conference action Saturday morning at a sunny Maple Street Field.

THE BASICS:

- Score: WPI 3, Framingham State 0

- Records: Framingham State (0-2), WPI (1-0)

Location: Maple Street Field – Framingham, Mass.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Engineers got on the board in the 7th minute junior Franco Bazzini finished a well-executed give and go with freshman Alejandro Clermont-Delgado to jump out to a 1-0 lead.
  • As the Rams were attempting to stall to end the half a mishandled ball in the Rams box led to freshman Matthew McLellan's first collegiate score to send WPI into the break up 2-0.
  • After hitting the cross bar a couple times the visitors scored again when senior Evan Hallberg settled a corner kick sent in from Matthew Biando and sent in over a diving Rams keeper.
  • The Rams had an opportunity to get on the board when Gabe Padilla headed a long cross in front  of the goal that went just over the crossbar.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • The Engineers controlled most of the offense of the game, recording 13 shots, 8 of which were on goal, while the Rams only put up 4 shots.
  • Sophomore keeper Ryan Martin earned the shutout win in net for WPI.
  • Sophomore Jake Hartshorn took the loss for the Rams making four saves before giving way to freshman Joseph Sturzo for the final twenty minutes. 

UP NEXT:

Framingham State will be on the road on Wednesday, September 8th when they visit Clark University at 7pm. WPI will host Brandeis on the same evening at 7pm.
