Men’s Soccer & Vikings Play to 0-0 Draw; Rams Remain Undefeated in MASCAC Play

Salem, Mass.- Salem State and Framingham State battled to a 0-0 draw at Alumni Field in a battle of the top two teams of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) on Saturday afternoon.

- Records: Salem State (10-4-2, 5-0-1 MASCAC), Framingham State (8-7-2, 5-0-1 MASCAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Vikings held the Rams to just five shots on goal, well below their season average of nine, as both keepers pitched a shutout. Matthew Hauntsman (Milford, N.H.) recorded four saves while the Rams' Corey Davidge (Blackstone, Mass.) finished with seven saves. 
  • Early in the opening half, Paa Sowe (Lynn, Mass.) had an opportunity to score for the Vikings as he was one-on-one with goalkeeper Davidge. Sowe took a shot, but Davidge deflected the ball out of play to keep the game scoreless. In the 35th minute, the Rams took a corner and Josh Ofosu's (Chelmsford, Mass.) shot went into the net, but the goal was called back for a handball on Odane Scale (Galtegobay, Jamaica). 
  • Later in the half, Ofosu crossed a pass into the box to Gustavo Cassemiro (Minas Gerais, Brazil), but Cassemiro headed the ball high over the crossbar.
  • At halftime, possession of the ball was nearly even between the teams. Salem State took seven shots with three shots on target. Framingham State attempted eight shots with only one on target.
  • In the 63rd minute, Bryant Nardizzi (Framingham, Mass.) just missed giving the Rams a lead as his free-kick attempt sailed just over the crossbar. Hauntsman made a critical save on Cassemiro's shot in the 72nd minute to keep the game even at 0-0. In the 83rd minute, the Vikings took a corner and Ryan Smith (Shelton, Conn.) took a low shot but it was just wide.
  • After 90 minutes, the game was still scoreless and was sent to extra time. In the first half of overtime, Geo Ramirez's (Lynn, Mass.) bid was headed wide left. In the final seconds of the second half, Salem State took a corner, but the ball was knocked away.   
  • For the game, the Vikings took 19 shots with seven on target. While the Rams attempted 20 shots with five on target.
  • It was a physical game with a combined 40 fouls (21 for Salem State and 19 for Framingham State) for the game.
