Men’s Soccer Drops Non-Conference Matchup at WPI

Worcester, Mass. – Anthony Vigliotta (Beverly, MA) and Jivan Purutyan (Concord, MA) each registered second half goals as WPI blanked visiting Framingham State 2-0 in a non-conference men's soccer contest played Tuesday evening.

After a scoreless opening half where WPI had the wind at its back and attempted all 10 shots in the opening 45 minutes, the Engineers finally dented the scoring early in the 57th minute.  Reese Peterson (Springfield, NY) sent a cross that was headed into the middle of the goal by a diving Vigliotta for the senior's first goal of 2017 and seventh of his career.  Just over 20 minutes later the host receive an insurance goal as Purutyan netted his first career marker when he buried a cross from Paul Beatty (Halifax, MA) that had rebounded off a defender.

WPI enjoyed a 21-3 edge in shots and attempted nine of the match's 10 corner kicks. Brendan Nemes (Kingston, MA) and Beatty combined for 10 of the Crimson and Gray's 21 shots while Jackson Conroy (Reading, MA), Nate Peterson (Mashpee, MA) and Brandon Hima (Watertown, CT) all had multiple shots.  Ken Stahovish (Springfield, MA) accounted for two of Framingham State's three shots and the lone attempt on goal while Tyler Treichler (Attleboro, MA) also launched a bid.

Jordan Finzel (Northport, NY) made one save in picking up his first victory of the season and fifth career clean sheet.  The senior captain now boasts a career mark of 11-1-1. Josh Arno (Natick, MA) was strong in net for the Rams, notching seven saves on the night.

Both teams return to action with key road matches on Saturday.  WPI ventures to Cambridge to take on MIT at noon while Framingham State travels to Bridgewater State for a 5pm match.
