MIT Triumphs Over Men’s Soccer

Cambridge, Mass. – In their 2017 home opener, the MIT men's soccer team defeated Framingham State University by a 4-1 score on Saturday afternoon in Cambridge. Three of the four MIT goals were scored by freshmen who each notched their first collegiate goals, while the other one came from senior captain Ryan Stuntz (Wellesley, Mass.) who also tallied an assist in today's win.

MIT, who hadn't scored yet this season, opened the scoring in just the seventh minute when junior Binh Le(Portage, Mich.) found freshman Loukas Carayannopoulos (Westfield, N.J.) who buried his first collegiate marker into the right side of the net to give MIT the 1-0 lead. Freshman Jack Snowdon (Lorton, Va.) doubled MIT's advantage when Stuntz found him on a great feed from the far sideline in the 33rd minute.

Framingham State answered with a strike 1:26 later on an excellent strike by Isaac De Souza (Sao Paulo, Brazil), who scored his team-leading fifth goal of the year on a feed by Ken Stahovish (Springfield, Mass.) at 34:02 as the score stood at 2-1 in favor of MIT at the break.

The score would remain the same until the Engineers put together two goals in a span of less than ten minutes to put the game away. In the 69th minute, junior Joshua Wilson (West Chester, Pa.) flicked the ball with his head to the feet of Stuntz, who struck the ball from the corner of the box for the 3-1 lead. The Engineers got one more goal prior to the final horn – this time on an unassisted goal by freshman Justin Cordero (Chino Hills, Calif.) as he notched his first collegiate goal on a shot from 20 yards out to give MIT the win in its 2017 home opener.

MIT keeper Jeremy Cowham (Quincy, Mass.) earned his first win of the fall (1-1-1) as he made two saves in a complete game effort for the Engineers, while Corey Davidge (0-1-0) posted three saves in his first start of the year for the Rams.

MIT outshot Framingham State by a 13-8 margin and held a 6-2 differential in corner kicks.

Both teams play at home in non-conference contests in their next contests, which will take play on Wednesday, September 13. MIT hosts Roger Williams University at 7:00 p.m., while Framingham State welcomes Curry College to its campus for a 4:00 p.m. start.
