Vikings Skate to 2-0 Victory in Ice Hockey Opener

FraminghamMass  The Salem State Vikings ice hockey team defeated Framingham State in MASCAC action by a score of 2-0 Thursday evening at Loring Arena.  

THE BASICS: 

- Score: Salem State 2, Framingham State 0  

- Records: Framingham State (0-1, 0-1 MASCAC), Salem State (1-11-0 MASCAC) 

- Location: Loring Arena – Framingham, Mass.  

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • Halfway through the second the Vikings had a great one time look that was saved by Blake Carlson on his glove hand side.  

  • The Vikings finally broke through in the 14th minute of the 2nd when Connor Woodley finished off a setup by Billy McGwin and Richard Coyle to go up 1-0.  

  • The Rams had a good look in the 7th minute of the third when a rebound settled in front of an open net but Joona Sato-Hunsula was able to cover it and kill the play.  

  • The Vikings scored an insurance goal in the 11th minute of the third when Erik Larsson put one in the top right corner from a sharp angle.  

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • Sato-Hunsula made 35 saves in the shutout win for the Vikings. 

  • Carlson stopped 29 shots in net for the Rams. 

  • The Vikings were 0-for-5 on the power play while the Rams were also 0-for-5.  

  • Zachary Bettmeng and Dylan Marty led the Rams with five shots a piece while Luke Day led the Vikings with five shots on goal.  

 

UP NEXT: 

  • The Rams return to the ice on Saturday when they travel to Southern New Hampshire for non-conference action starting at 7:40pm. The Vikings are idle until next Thursday when they travel to Fitchburg State for MASCAC play at 6pm.
