Men’s Ice Hockey Opens Season With 3-3 Tie vs. Becker

Framingham, Mass. – Framingham State junior Ryan McDonough (Dorchester, Mass.) scored on a breakaway with less than five minutes to play in regulation to tie the game and force overtime as the Rams went on to play to a 3-3 draw with Becker College in their season opener Tuesday evening at Loring Arena. The Rams start their 2017-18 campaign at 0-0-1 as the Hawks are now 1-0-1.

After a scoreless first period the Hawks broke through in the opening minutes of the second period when Alex Kielczewski (Grand Praire, TX) scored with assists from Brian Greene (Barnstead, NH) and Brandon Morgan (Rochster, NY).

The visitors took a 2-0 lead when the struck on the power play a little over halfway through the period when Greene scored with help from Corey Sherman (Hilton, NY) and Chuck Costello (Philadelphia, PA).

The Rams cut their deficit to one goal in the final minute of the period when Michael Gennello (East Windsor, NJ) scored a power play goal with helpers from Jack Pierson (Livonia, MI) and Soren Colstrup (Owatonna, MN).

Becker scored in the opening minute of the third period on the power play when James Wallace (Levittown, PA) scored with help from Christian Leon and John Dutney.

The Rams again cut the lead to a goal when in the 7th minute of the third Matt Siegel (Syracuse, NY) scored his first collegiate goal with help from Ryan Paul (Morgan, VT) and Brandon Hamner (Waltham, Mass.).

McDonough forced a turnover in the neutral zone and scooped up the loose puck skating past the Hawks defender and was able to beat the goalie to knot the game at 3 all.

Freshman Ryan Clifford (Coventry, RI) made 46 stops in net for the Hawks. Rams sophomore Greg Harney (East Haven, Conn.) turned away 50 shots for the hosts.

Both teams were 2-for-10 on the power play with 21 penalties called in the contest.  

The Rams return to the ice on Thursday, November 2nd when they host Franklin Pierce. Becker will host Curry College on the same night.
