Ice Hockey Skates to 2-2 Draw with Salem State
Salem, Mass - Brett Casavant (Gardner, Mass.) scored a
power-play goal with 14 seconds remaining in regulation to help the
Framingham State Rams earn a 2-2 tie against the Salem State
Vikings on Saturday afternoon.
Casavant, who scored his sixth goal of the season, took a feed from
Eric Walsh (Haverhill, Mass.) off the face-off and ripped a shot
past goalie Sam Avoine (Ste-Perpetue, Quebec).
Salem State, which has now dropped three straight games, fell to
7-6-2 overall and, 6-2-2 in the MASCAC conference. Framingham State
snapped a nine-game losing streak and improved to 1-12-2, and 1-8-1
in conference.
The Vikings opened up fast and jumped out to a 2-0 first period
lead. Mike Genovese (Hingham, Mass.) scored 8:52 into the period to
give the home team a 1-0 lead. Nick Lampson (Groton, Mass.), scored
his ninth goal of the season five and a half minutes later to give
Salem State a 2-0 cushion at the end of the first period. The
Vikings outshot the Rams 26-6 in the period, but goalie William
Sais (Bloomington, MN) did not falter, giving Framingham State a
chance to stay in the game.
Joseph Hurley (Charlestown, MA) scored on an assist from Blair
Nickerson (Beverly, Mass.) at 5:08 in the second period to cut the
Salem State lead to 2-1. Despite owning a huge advantage in shots
(52-20), including 12-5 in the third period, the Vikings could
not fluster Sais (50 saves), and settled for a 2-2 tie
Avoine, who fell to 2-3-1 in goal made 18 stops.
The Vikings will travel to Bowdoin on Tuesday, January 26th for
8:00 PM game, while Framingham State goes to Plymouth State next
Thursday for a 6:00 PM game.
