Bridgewater’s Late Surge Downs Field Hockey

Bridgewater, Mass.- The Bridgewater State University field hockey team rallied from a two-goal deficit to post a 3-2 win in a shootout over Little East Conference rival Framingham State University on Wednesday afternoon at Swenson Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

• Bridgewater State scored twice in the last five minutes of regulation, including the game-tying marker with ten seconds remaining, to send the game into overtime. After two scoreless overtime sessions, the Bears outscored the visiting Rams, 2-1, in the penalty shootout to earn the win.
• The Bears improve to 2-8 on the season and 2-4 in the Little East with their second shootout victory, while the Rams fall to 3-9 overall and 1-6 in conference play.  
• Freshman forwards Corlene Guenard (Acton, Mass.) Mallory Weir (Bear, Del.) netted a pair of first-half goals for Framingham State as the Rams held a 2-0 lead at the break.
• BSU junior forward Olivia Ahlman (Halifax, Mass.) scored on a double deflection off a penalty corner with 4:31 left to play in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 2-1. Sophomore forwardKatie Swart (Bridgewater, Mass.) assisted on the strike.
• With time winding down, Swart knocked home a short crossing pass out of mid-air from Ahlman with just ten seconds showing on the scoreboard to send the game into overtime. It marked the first collegiate goal for Swart. 
• Neither team scored in the two overtime sessions as the game went to a penalty shootout.
• In the shootout, both teams scored on their first attempt with sophomore forward Victoria Camara(Westport, Mass.) finding the back of the net for the Bears and Weir converting for the Rams. Junior defender Meghan Welch (Hubbardston, Mass.) scored on Bridgewater State's fourth attempt to give the hosts a 2-1 lead. BSU senior goalkeeper Jillian Delaney (Foxborough, Mass.) stopped the Rams' final two shootout attempts to secure the win.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Framingham finished with a 21-11 shot advantage for the game including a 7-2 edge in the two overtime periods. The Rams also held a 19-6 advantage in penalty corner attempts.
• Delaney made 11 saves to record her second win of the season between the pipes for the Bears. Sophomore netminder Grace Pushor (Old Town, Maine) turned aside seven shots in the setback for the visitors.

The Little East conference schedule continues for both teams on Saturday morning at 11. The Bears travel to Keene State College to take on the Owls, while the Rams entertain the Lancers of Worcester State University.
