Salem, Mass. – The Salem State University field hockey team scored with less than seven minutes remaining in the game as the Vikings defeated the Framingham State University Rams 2-1 in Little East Conference (LEC) action at Alumni Field.
With the win, the Vikings improve to 2-8 on the year and are now 1-6 in the league, while the Rams are now 2-7 on the season and 1-6 in the Little East.
Vanessa Yavorski (Georgetown, Mass.) tallied the game winner for the Vikings as she slipped a shot past the Rams keeper with 6:41 remaining in the second half.
Courtney Smith had given the Vikings the early lead with a goal off a feed from Casie Curtin just over six minutes into the game. Sophomore Mycala Moody (North Attleboro, Mass.) knotted the game just over two minutes later as she converted off a feed from Meaghann Ackerman (Littleton, Mass.).
The Vikings outshot the Rams 9-6 in the game, but the Rams held a 5-2 edge in penalty corners. Haley Duggan took the loss for the Rams despite making five saves.
The Rams are back in action on Tuesday night with a non-conference game at Regis College beginning at 4 p.m.
