Football Opens Season with 27-7 Setback at Brockport

Brockport, N.Y. - The Framingham State University football team  opened the 2022 season this afternoon and were defeated 27-7 by Brockport in a non-conference clash at Bob Boozer Field. 

THE BASICS:

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The Golden Eagles got on the board first in the opening quarter when Nick Wigent converted a 27-yard field goal with just over seven minutes on the clock. 

  • The Golden Eagles extended the lead to 17-0 at the half with a pair of second quarter touchdowns. Todd Simonds completed a 67-yard touchdown pass and Rashad Law scored from three yards out. 

  • The Rams got on the board midway through the third quarter when Noah Leonard completed a 38-yard touchdown pass to Manny Lara on a third and 27 from Brockport's 38-yard line. After Matt Farley converted the point after, the Rams trailed 17-7. 

  • Wigent converted a 33-yard field goal in the opening minutes of the fourth pushing the lead to 20-7. 

  • Brockport's John DeRidder returned an interception 21-yards for a touchdown to account for the final score of the game. 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: 

  • The Rams defense was led in the game by a team-high 13 tackles including 11 solo stops and a pass breakup from Cully Curran. 

  • Nick Ashley and Chase Buono chipped in with seven tackles apiece. Ashley added a pass breakup and two hurries. Daniel Oloyede recorded a pair of solo tackles in the game including the Rams only sack of the game. 

  • Jaden Lewis compiled 102 yards on three returns including a 42 yard kickoff return. 

  • Nick Goffredo and Noah Leonard combined for 137 yards passing in the game, with Leonard picking up 24 yards rushing in the game. 

  • The Rams leading receiver was Nicholas Gordon who made four catches for 54 yards, while Lara finished the game with one catch for a touchdown. 

  • The Golden Eagles compiled 384 yards of total offense to 191 for the Rams. Simonds finished the game 14-of-23 for 208 yards and a touchdown.

The Rams are back in action next Saturday when they host St. John Fisher at Bowditch Field at noon.
