Buzzards Bay, Mass. – The Framingham State University football team overcame a four-point second half deficit with a pair of third quarter touchdowns to remain unbeaten in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) play in a 23-14 victory at Massachusetts Maritime Saturday afternoon.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Devaun Ford rushed for 183 yards on 27 carries, including a 75-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter that gave the Rams the lead for good.  Ford also hauled in four catches for 51 yards that included a 26-yard touchdown.
  • Quarterback Nicolas Goffredo completed 16-of-25 pass attempts for 186 yards and a touchdown, including seven connections with Elijah Nichols for 70 yards.
  • Joshua Onujiogu registered a pair of sacks, including a strip sack that was returned 39 yards by Gerell Boyce for a defensive touchdown.
  • The Rams outgained the Buccaneers by a 399-129 margin, including 211-55 on the ground alone.
  • Chase Buono recorded seven total tackles to lead the way defensively for Framingham State, which received a game-sealing interception from Cully Curran.
  • Curtis Cann threw for 74 yards and a touchdown for Massachusetts Maritime, which received 74 rushing yards from Jonah Mitchell.
  • Kyle Rogers paced the Buccaneers defensively with 11 total tackles.
  • Framingham State won its 13th straight in the “Kelley Cup” series with Massachusetts Maritime dating back to 2007.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Rams got on the board just five minutes into the contest when Goffredo hooked up with Ford on a 26-yard touchdown toss, and Matthew Farley’s PAT capped the five-play, 61-yard drive.
  • Massachusetts Maritime evened matters after Thomas Garland recovered a blocked punt in the end zone with 3:49 to play in the opening stanza, as George Lampros added the PAT.
  • That score held up until the closing seconds of the first half when Henrique De Boni lofted a 36-yard field goal against a fierce wind coming off the Cape Cod Canal to stake Framingham State to a 10-7 edge at the break.
  • The Buccaneers took their only lead of the day on the opening drive after intermission when Cann connected with Evan Dyer on a one-yard touchdown.  Lampros tacked on the extra point to give MMA a 14-10 edge with 9:11 remaining in the third quarter.
  • It took just 16 seconds for the Rams to regain the advantage for good, as Ford burst down the right side untouched on the first play of the ensuing drive for a 16-14 lead.
  • Framingham State closed out the scoring on the next Massachusetts Maritime drive, as Onujiogu broke through for his strip sack of Cann that was brought back to the house by Boyce.  Farley’s PAT conversion gave the visitors a nine-point cushion that held up as the final margin for the afternoon.

The Rams host Bridgewater State in a key MASCAC outing next Saturday at Bowditch Field beginning at Noon.  Framingham State holds a one-game lead over the Bears in the league standings heading into that contest.  Massachusetts Maritime travels to Plymouth State for a MASCAC clash next Saturday at Noon.
