Football Rushes Past Mass. Maritime 50-7

Framingham, Mass. – The Framingham State University football defeated Massachusetts Maritime Academy 50-7 this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at Framingham's Bowditch Field.

With the win, the Ram improve to 4-0 on the season and are now 2-0 in the league, while the Buccaneers move to 1-2 overall and are 0-1 in the MASCAC.

The Rams got on the board just 45 second into the game on a pick six from senior Svenn Jacobson (Cumberland, ME).  Three minutes later, junior Quron Wright (Worcester, Mass.) scampered into the end zone on a 29-yard touchdown run.  With just over six minutes remaining in the first junior Will Cowdrey (Marlborough, Mass.) scored on a 10-yard run putting the Rams in control 22-0 after one quarter.

Junior Napoleon Miller (Boston, Mass.) caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from senior Zak Walker (Ayer, Mass.) in the opening minutes of the second quarter. Mass. Maritime got on the board two minutes later on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Chris Haggerty to Ryan Taft that capped an eight play, 68 yard drive.

Miller would find the end zone once more in the quarter on a 19-yard end around.  The Rams capped the scoring with a 20 yard touchdown pass from Walker to senior Stephen Beahn (Spencer, Mass.) in the third and on a four yard touchdown run by junior Sebastien Robert (Cambridge, Mass.) in the fourth.

The Rams amassed 402 yards of offense in the game including 264 on the ground, while Mass. Maritime, who had just three yards of offense in the first quarter, had 220 yards of offense in the game, but was limited to just 40 yards on the ground with the Rams defense forcing three turnovers.

Wright rushed for 96 yards in the game on 14 carries with a touchdown, while Cowdrey recorded 57 yards on eight attempts.  Walker finished the game 16-of-21 for 140 yards with two touchdowns.  Miller finished the game with four catches for 35 yards and rushed for 23, while senior Mike Calicchio (Chelmsford, Mass.) had four catches for 53 yards.

Haggerty finished the game completing 18-of-40 pass attempts for 169 yards with a touchdown and two picks, while Richie Phillips rushed for 32 yards on 11 carries.  Paul Sances made five catches for 39 yards, while Taft had three grabs for 37 yards and a score.

The Rams received four tackles, all solo, from senior Nathan Fleming (Windham, Conn.), while sophomore Joshua Smiley (Chicopee, Mass.) added three with a sack.  Jacobson recorded two tackles and a pick six in the game, while senior Tom Burns (Attleboro, Mass.) also had two tackles and a pick.

The Buccaneer defense received eight tackles including two for a loss from Bobby Gross, while Sean Smialek added eight tackles with and a pass breakup.

The Rams are idle next week but return to the field on Friday, October 6th when they travel to Fitchburg State for a 7 p.m. contest, while the Buccaneers host Fitchburg State next Saturday at 1 p.m.
