Baseball Captures Share of MASCAC Regular Season Title with Sweep of Fitchburg State

Fitchburg, Mass. - The Framingham State University baseball team captured a share of the 2023 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Baseball Regular Season Title after sweeping a doubleheader with Fitchburg State by scores of 13-10 and 4-1 this afternoon at Riccard Field.   

The Rams finished tied atop the conference standings with Bridgewater State who was swept this afternoon by Westfield State and also finished 15-6 in league play. 

THE BASICS:

-Records: Framingham State (25-13, 15-6 MASCAC), Fitchburg State (18-19, 9-12 MASCAC)

Game 1: 

  • The Rams jumped out to a 2-0 lead in their first at bat of the day on a steal of home from Steven Burbank and an RBI single from Robert Johnston. 

  • The Rams added two more in the top of the second on an RBI single from Shane Costello and a Burbank sacrifice fly, but the Falcons plated two in the bottom of the inning closing the gap to 4-2. 

  • The Rams rattled off two more in the top of the third and five runs in the top of the fourth extending the lead to 11-2.   Cam Gilroy drove in a run in the third with a sacrifice fly and added a two run single in the top of the fourth. 

  • The Falcons did not go away closing the gap to one (11-10) after plating three in the fifth and five in the sixth, but the Rams tacked on two more in the top of the seventh to reach the final margin. 

  • James Gilleran earned the victory on the mound going five innings, allowing five earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. Anthony Panza earned his seventh save of the season tossing an inning of scoreless relief. 

  • Johnston finished the day with two hits and three RBI, while Gilroy recorded three hits and drove in three. 

Game 2: 

  • The Rams grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Ryan Boyle delivered a sacrifice fly and Caleb Hendrix and Johnston added RBI base hits. 

  • The Rams pushed the lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth on a Burbank RBI single. 

  • The Falcons tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth on an infield single to reach the final margin. 

  • Adam Martin earned the victory on the hill going seven innings, allowing one earned run on five hits with seven strikeouts and no walks. 

  • Burbank finished the game 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Johnston finished with a pair of hits and an RBI.
