Baseball Sweeps MASCAC Doubleheader at Westfield State

Westfield, Mass. - The Framingham State University baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader this afternoon defeating Westfield State 10-2 in the opener before holding on for a 5-3 victory in the night cap in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon at Hagan Field.     

THE BASICS:

Game 1: 

  • In the opener, the Rams grabbed a 3-0 lead after a single by Steven Burbank and an Owl error allowed two runs to score. Ryan Boyle followed with a sacrifice fly in the top of the third. 

  • The Owls closed the gap to 3-2 after single runs in the bottom of the fourth and sixth. 

  • The Rams sent 11 batters to the plate and blitzed the Owls with a seven-run top of the seventh. Matthew Shaver gave the Rams breathing room with a two-run single to left to drive the lead to three runs. With two outs in the frame, five straight Rams hitters reached base with Caleb Hendrix and Robert Johnston delivering the knockout blow with consecutive two-RBI hits to opening up the eventual 10-2 final score.     

  • James Gilleran earned the victory on the mound going six innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with five strikeouts. Jacob Gorman tossed a scoreless inning in relief and did not allow a hit. 

  • Johnston finished the game 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI, while Hendrix and Lucas Basile each picked up a pair of hits. 

Game 2: 

  • In game two, the Rams took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first after RBI singles from Hendrix, Johnston and Basile. 

  • The game would remain 3-0 until Matthew Shaver delivered a two-run single to center in the top of the seventh pushing the lead to 5-0. 

  • Westfield would rally in the top of the seventh loading the bases with no outs. After a pitching change, the Owls closed the gap to 5-3 after an RBI single and a pair of RBI outs. Basile came through with a diving catch in right field for the final out, ending the game and preserving the victory for the Rams.  

  • Freshman Adam Martin was outstanding on the mound for the Rams. Martin went six innings, five shutout, allowing three earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts. 

  • Anthony Panza earned his sixth save of the season tossing an inning in relief allowing just one hit.
