Baseball Defeats Newbury 4-1 in Non-Conference Action

Framingham, Mass. - The Framingham State University baseball team received two hits and two RBI from senior Joe Ambrosino (Bradeton, Fla.) as the Rams defeated Newbury College 4-1 in non-conference action this afternoon at Bowditch Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Newbury grabbed the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning.  David Center led off the game with a walk and moved to second on a wild pitch.  A single off the bat of Dante Serino put runners on the corners for Dylan Presby, who grounded into a fielder's choice scoring the Nighthawks only run of the game.
  • The Rams plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the third taking the lead for good.  Senior Aaron Williams (Brockton, Mass.) singled with one out and came around to score all the way from first on a double to left center by junior Bobby Higgins (Barnstable, Mass.).  Ambrosino followed with a double to deep center scoring Higgins.
  • The Rams tacked on single runs in the bottom of the fifth and eighth to reach the final score.
  • In the fifth, Higgins laced a two out double and Ambrosino followed with an RBI single.
  • In the eighth, Ambrosino walked to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Senior Matt Fogarty (Millis, Mass.) was hit by a pitch.  Junior Andrew Curtis (Dracut, Mass.) followed with a ball between third and short that was knocked down, but Ambrosino beat the throw home for the final run of the day.
  • The Rams used six pitchers in the game with freshman Anthony Panza (Watertown, Mass.) earned the victory tossing two innings of scoreless relief.  Junior Randy White (Hubbardston, Mass.) tossed a scoreless ninth to earn the save.
  • Joe Persechino took the loss for the Nighthawks going four innings and allowing two earned runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
  • Ambrosino finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI, a walk and a run scored, while Higgins went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two run scored and an RBI.

The Rams are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Fitchburg State for a MASCAC doubleheader at 2 p.m., while the Nighthawks host Lesley University on Saturday for a pair of games at 2 p.m.
