Baseball Loses Two Close Games at Worcester State

Worcester, Mass. – The Worcester State University baseball team swept the Rams of Framingham State by scores of 4-3 and 2-1 in Saturday afternoon Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action at the Kevin D. Lyons Diamond. The Lancers' winning streak extends to six with the sweep. 
 
With the wins Worcester State improves to 10-16 and 5-1 in the MASCAC. Framingham State moves to 11-13 and 2-4 in league play.
 
The Worcester State University baseball team came out on top 4-3 for the first win of the afternoon as junior right hand pitcher Kyle Sullivan (Hudson, Mass.) pitched the complete-game and struck out eight batters in the appearance.
 
Framingham State quickly scored as Kyle Pileski (Bristol, Conn.) singled up the middle to send home leadoff hitter Aaron Williams (Brockton, Mass.) who had reached on a single to right field. Worcester State had two baserunners in the flip side of the inning, but Framingham State got out of it with a double-play opportunity. 
 
Following a hitless second inning on both sides, Worcester State came through and took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third. Ben Palatino (Hudson, Mass.) began the inning with a single to left field and made his way around the bases stealing to put himself in scoring position with Kevin Larkin (Rocky Hill, Conn.) at the dish. Larkin doubled to left center to score Palatino, and then next up William Roberge(Warwick, R.I.) drove in Larkin on a single to right for the lead.
 
Framingham State tied the game up at 2-2 in the top of the fourth when Pileski homered to left field. Though, Worcester took back the lead in the reverse side on a sacrifice fly from Jimmy Sheehan (Oxford, Mass.).
 
The Lancers added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Colin Medeiros (Fall River, Mass.).
 
Sullivan pitched a hitless fifth and sixth inning, and struck out two in the top of the seventh despite an attempted comeback from Framingham State, who scored one run on a Williams double down the left field line.
 
Williams batted 3-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI and Pileski batted 2-for-2 with a home run, walk, and two RBI. Christopher Riga (Westfield, Mass.) took the loss in a four-inning performance for the Rams. He allowed three runs on five hits, struck out four, and walked five.
 
The Lancers edged Framingham State 2-1 in the final game of the afternoon as it was a pitching duel between Worcester State's Matt Irzyk (Westfield, Mass.) and Framingham State's Michael Andrews (Stoneham, Mass.). 
 
Irzyk earned the win as he allowed one run on seven hits. He walked two batters, and struck out six. In six innings pitched, Andrews allowed two runs on five hits. He walked one batter and struck out five at the plate.
 
The Lancers were hitless until the bottom of the third inning when they scored two runs on RBI from Sheehan and Breton. 
 
Framingham State's scored their lone run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI double from Kyle Lippert (Carlsbad, Calif.). The Rams were unable to score in the seventh as two fly-outs and a strikeout concluded the game.
 
Framingham State's Jordan Pallazola (Rockport, Mass.) and Lippert both batted 2-for-3. Lippert drove home the Rams' sole run on a double. 
 
 
MASCAC action resumes on Monday (Apr. 16) for Worcester State who will travel to Salem State for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m. Framingham State's next scheduled game is set for Tuesday (Apr. 17) at Roger Williams.
