Northborough, Mass. – The Framingham State University baseball team surrendered three runs in the top of the third inning as they were defeated 3-1 by New England College this evening in non-conference action at the New England Baseball Complex.

With the win, the Pilgrims improve to 8-3 on the year, while the Rams are now 7-7.

New England College plated three runs in the top of the third with two outs on a three run homerun to left off the bat of sophomore Stanley Vargas.  Vargas plated senior Justin Carey who had reached on an error and junior Evan Delaney who had been hit by a pitch.

The Rams had an opportunity in the bottom of the fourth inning after back-to-back singles from sophomore Anthony Venuti (Braintree, Mass.) and junior Aaron Williams (Brockton, Mass.), but NEC starting pitcher Jameson Carey was able to get three straight outs and end the inning.

The Rams finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning. Williams reached on an infield single with two outs and moved to second on a balk.  Senior Cameron Borrelli (Peabody, Mass.) reached on an error by the Pilgrims and Williams raced home from second on the play for the Rams only run of the game.

Jameson Carey earned the victory on the mound for the Pilgrims going seven innings and allowing one unearned run on four hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.  Nick Powers tossed two innings of scoreless relief and earned his first save of the year.

Senior Mike Andrews (Stoneham, Mass.) took the loss for the Rams going five innings and allowing three runs, all unearned, on eight hits with two strikeouts and did not issue a walk.  Junior Kyle Hodgson (Berkley, Mass.) tossed four innings of scoreless relief for the Rams allowing just two hits with seven strikeouts.

The Rams are back in action next Wednesday when they travel to Salve Regina at 3:30 p.m., while the Pilgrims travel to Lasell College on Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
