Baseball Splits Two with Carleton

Tucson, AZ – The Framingham State University baseball team took game one of a doubleheader with Carleton by a score of 8-3 before falling in game two 15-3 to close out their spring break trip to the Tucson Invitational Games.

The Rams return home with a record of 7-6 and are back in action on Tuesday night at the New England Baseball Complex when they host New England College at 7 p.m.

In the opener, the Rams sent 11 men to the plate in the bottom first inning scoring six runs on six hits to take control of the contest.  Sophomore Anthony Venuti (Braintree, Mass.) led off the inning with a single and was followed by a walk from junior Aaron Williams (Brockton, Mass.).  Senior Cameron Borrelli (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Jeff Besozzi (Milford, Mass.) plated a run apiece on RBI singles and Anthony Herman drove in a run on a bases loaded ground out.  Matt Brockett (Guilford, Conn.) followed with a two run single and Venuti singled in a run in his second plate appearance of the inning putting the Rams up 6-0.

Carleton got a run back in the top of the second, but the Rams added two more in the bottom of the inning on a two run homer by junior Jordan Pallazola (Rockport, Mass.). 

Carelton added single runs in the top of the fourth and fifth to reach the final margin.

Borrelli went four-for-four in game with three doubles, two runs scored and an RBI.  Venuti and Besozzi each collected a pair of hits in four at bats, while junior Joe Ambrosino (Bradeton, Fla.) went two-for-three.

Senior Chris Riga (Westfield, Mass.) earned the win on the mound going five innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits with nine strikeouts and five walks.  Junior Alex Erwin (Tewksbury, Mass.) tossed two innings of scoreless relief surrendering no hits with two strikeouts.

In game two, Carleton pushed across eight runs on 10 hits in the bottom of the first inning and added two more in the bottom of the third to push the lead to 10-0.  Carleton tallied two more in the fourth and three in the fifth to account for all of their runs.

The Rams got on the board in the top of the sixth with three runs including an RBI double by Pallazola.

Williams went two-for-four at the plate for the Rams in game two with a run scored, while Besozzi went one-for-three with an RBI.

Sophomore Kyle Coolidge (Plymouth, Mass.) took the loss in game two allowing eight runs, four earned, on eight hits.  Junior Blake Waters (East Sandwich, Mass.) tossed an inning and a third of scoreless relief for the Rams to close the game.
