Baseball Drops MASCAC Opening Doubleheader to Fitchburg State

Northborough, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University baseball team took both ends of a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) doubleheader this evening against the Framingham State Rams by scores of 4-3 and  14-4 at the New England Baseball Complex.     

With the wins, Fitchburg State is now 2-0 on the year in the conference and 7-11 overall, while the Rams slide to 4-12 overall and are 0-2 in the MASCAC

Fitchburg State capitalized on a pair of Framingham errors in the top of the first of the opener to take a 1-0 lead.  The Rams answered with a pair of solo homeruns from freshman Anthony Venuti (Braintree, Mass.) and senior Jon Chapman (Waltham, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Kyle Pileski (Bristol, Conn.) to take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the third.

Fitchburg tied the game in the top of the sixth on a two RBI double from senior Brendan Cutler (Clinton, Mass.).  Junior Steven Drury (Leominster, Mass.) put the Falcons on top for good with an RBI single.

Senior Zack Kirby (Rochester, Mass.) took the loss for the Rams going seven innings and allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits with 10 strikeouts.  Sophomore Tommy Parsons (Peabody, Mass.) earned the victory going the distance and allowing three earned runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts.

The Rams took the early lead in game two on Chapman's second homer of the day. This one was a two run shot to center in the bottom of the first.  The Falcons tied the game in the top of the second, but an Aaron Rios (Stratford, Conn.) RBI single in the bottom of the inning put the Rams back on top.

 The Falcons  batted around in the top of the third and plated 10 runs, including a grandslam from senior Robert Lewis, to take control of the nightcap.  The Rams were able to add a final run in the fourth on an RBI single by senior Jake Wardwell (Hudson, Mass.)  

The Rams are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Western New England at 3:30 p.m., while Falcons host Anna Maria on Monday at 3 p.m.
