Baseball Holds Off Lasell for 8-7 Victory

Waltham, Mass. – Sophomore infielder Ivan Colon (Waltham, Mass.) racked up four hits and three RBI as the Framingham State University baseball team held off Lasell College for an 8-7 win this evening in non-conference action at Stein Diamond.

With the win, the Rams improve to 9-7 on the season, while the Lasers fall to 5-12.

Framingham State took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on a Pedro Acevedo (Fall River, Mass.) RBI single, but Lasell was able to answer with two runs of its own in the home half of the inning to grab a 2-1 lead. Joshua Sullivan (Rockland, Mass.) reached on an error by the Rams and as a result David Long (Brookfield, CT) and Matt Mahoney (Rockland, Mass.) crossed the plate for the Lasers.

The Rams looked to have complete control of the game after scoring three runs in the third and another three runs in the fourth to push the lead to 7-2. Colon, Will Crofton (Hopkinton, Mass.), and Acevedo all contributed with RBIs in the two inning outburst by Framingham State.

Lasell narrowed its deficit to 7-6 in the bottom of the fifth inning by tallying four runs in the frame. Bobby Stachura (Middletown, CT) worked a bases loaded walk forcing in Corey Michel (Rochester, NH) to start off the scoring. After a wild pitch to two of the next three hitters, the Lasers narrowed the gap to two. Lasell made it a one run game when Chris Williams (Hingham, Mass.) reached on an error that drove in Stachura.

Colon added an RBI single for the Rams in the top of the eighth inning driving in Cam Couillard (North Andover, Mass.), who had reached on an error, increasing the Rams lead to 8-6.

Conor Cavanagh (Quincy, Mass.) struck a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth. Stachura followed with a single of his own to give the Lasers runners on first and second with no outs. Chris Pittman (Brockton, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice and a Rams error brought home Cavanagh. However, Lasell was unable to produce any more runs in the ninth and suffered an 8-7 defeat.

Framingham State starting pitcher Felipe Barahona (Lynn, Mass) improved his season record to 2-0 as he earned the victory for the Rams tossing five innings on the hill, giving up six runs (three earned) on five hits and six strikeouts.  Senior Rob McLaughlin (Plymouth, Mass.) tossed two innings of scoreless relief, while sophomore Brendan Busa (Framingham, Mass.) allowed an unearned run in two innings of work as he earned the save.

Sullivan (0-2) took the loss for the Lasers going four innings while allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits.  Greg Sherman (Marshfield, Mass.) pitched well for Lasell in relief, throwing five innings while only allowing one unearned run on four hits while striking out four.

Colon went 4-for-5 in the game with a pair of triples, two runs scored and a stolen base, while Acevedo finished with a pair of hits and a pair of RBI.  Crofton finished the game 1-of-4 at the plate with two runs scored and two RBI, while sophomore Tony Iafolla (Medfield, Mass.) collected three hits.

Sullivan and Billy Uberti (Newton, Mass.) both chipped in with two hits for Lasell in the game, while Sullivan also registered a stolen base.

The Lasers will return to action Thursday night against Salem State University at 7 p.m., while the Rams travel to UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
