Five Rams Named to All-MASCAC Baseball Teams – Blumsack Selected MASCAC Baseball Coach of the Year
Framingham, Mass. — The Framingham State College baseball team placed five players on the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) All-conference baseball team and head coach Brian Blumsack was selected the 2010 MASCAC Baseball Coach of the Year in voting conducted by the league’s eight head coaches and announced this morning by the conference.
Junior outfielder Steven Tramontozzi (Watertown, Mass.) was the Rams lone first team selection, while outfielder Corey Ketterer (Plymouth, Mass.), catcher Sean Callahan (Watertown, Mass.) and starting pitchers Charlie Spear (Exeter, NH) and Tommy Lindberg (Stratford, Conn.) all received second team honors. Ketterer, Callahan, Spear and Lindberg receive All-MASCAC honors for the first time.
Blumsack, who was recognized by his peers as the Coach of the Year, is in his third season with the Rams and under his guidance the Rams have improved in each of his three seasons. In 2010 he guided the Rams to their best record in over a decade. The Rams 23-15 mark this season is only the seventh time the Rams have reached the 20 win mark and 23 wins ties the school record for victories in a season. Blumsack’s Rams went 11-3 in the MASCAC this season and are returning to the MASCAC Tournament for the first time since 2003.
Tramontozzi, who was an All-MASCAC second team selection in each of the last two years, receives first team honors for the first time as he batted .328 this season with 15 doubles, five homers and 49 RBI. Tramontozzi is ranked second in the conference in doubles and RBI and was seven for seven in stolen bases attempts this season.
Ketterer leads the Rams with 47 hits this season and an on base percentage of .472. He is second with a .362 average which includes seven doubles, a triple and 25 RBI.
Callahan racked up a .348 average with seven doubles, 34 RBI and five homeruns including two walk off homers. His first was a grand slam that lifted the Rams to a win over Eastern Nazarene and the second lifted the Rams to a key win over Fitchburg State. He leads the Rams defense with a .994 fielding percentage as he threw out 26-of-41 runners attempting to steal.
Spear and Lindberg are the Rams number one and two starters who went a combined 7-1 with two no decisions in conference games this season as both rank in the conference’s top ten in ERA. Spear’s record stands at 3-3 on the year with a 3.70 ERA. Opponents are only hitting .226 off Spear, who is second in the conference averaging 9.8 strikeouts per game. Lindberg has a 5-1 overall record, which places him in a tie for third in the conference, including a 4-0 mark in the MASCAC. He has tossed three complete games and has an ERA of 3.77.
The Rams 23-15 overall record is their best finish since 1997 and after finishing second in the conference standings with an 11-3 record will host third seed Worcester State in an opening round game of the MASCAC Championship on Thursday night. The Rams are making just their third appearance in the conference tournament and their first since 2003. FSC was the fourth seed in its two previous appearances and has not hosted a tournament game before. The double elimination tournament concludes over that weekend at top seed Westfield State.
